Important Information for Families

Dress code

  • Lower Grades (Pre-K–5): Grey or light blue tops and navy blue bottoms
  • Middle Grades (6–8): Navy blue tops and grey bottoms
  • Upper Grades (9–12): No color specifications
  • WHEELS-branded clothing is available for purchase through the online store, but families are not required to purchase clothing with the WHEELS logo. Students may wear any shirts and bottoms that follow the dress code colors for their grade level; incoming Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 6th-grade students will receive WHEELS-issued dress code clothing to help them get started.

 

Hours, drop off, pick up

  • School day for all grades: 8:20 AM to 2:40 PM

 

Drop off and Pick Up

  • Starting in Kindergarten, students can be dropped off as early as 8:00 AM for breakfast. Families, if you arrive before 8 AM, please stay with your child until they are escorted from the lobby to the cafeteria. Lower grades (PK-5) students cannot be left unattended in the vestibule (entry area). Pre-K students cannot be left for breakfast.
  • Locations:
    • Pre-K through 5 students enter and exit through the doors on Amsterdam Avenue.
    • 6-8 students enter and exit through the main entry door on 182nd street.
    • 9-12 students enter and exit through the stairwell doors on 182nd street.

What after-school options do you have?

  • Alianza is for children in grades K through 8 (JK is waiting for Pete for enrollment guidance)
  • Global Kids is for children in grades 6 through 8 running from 2:40 pm to 5:30 pm daily. It starts on Monday, September 14th. Here are links to registration forms in English and Spanish. Please return them in person to Room B2.
  • WHEELS will also start running clubs after school starting in mid to late September.

Does my child receive free transportation to school?

NYC Public Schools provides free transportation for eligible students through a Student OMNY Card, yellow school bus, or specialized transportation.

For most students, eligibility is based on grade level and the walking distance between home and school:

Grade Generally eligible when the student lives… Transportation
Pre-K Eligibility varies Please contact the school
K–2 0.5 mile or more from school Yellow bus or Student OMNY Card
3–6 0.5 mile or more from school Student OMNY Card and/or yellow bus, depending on distance and bus availability
7–12 0.5 mile or more from school Student OMNY Card

Students who live less than 0.5 mile from school are generally not eligible for free transportation.

Are there exceptions?

Yes. Different transportation rules may apply to students who:

  • have transportation accommodations through an IEP or 504 Plan

  • are in temporary housing

  • are in foster care

  • have an approved medical or safety-related transportation exception
